Afternoon storms bring flood risk to DC region Monday

The triple-digit heatwave that hung over the nation’s 250th anniversary may be over Monday. But high temps, souplike humidity and potentially severe storms are expected to outlast the pomp and circumstance after thunderclouds pelted the East Coast with rain and hail over the weekend.

Heavy rainstorms could bring flooding to the D.C. area Monday.

The National Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire region beginning at 4 p.m. The advisory extends from Cecil County, Maryland, in the east to Morgan County, West Virginia, in the west and from Baltimore County in the north to Albermarle County, Virginia, in the south.

Storms are expected to bring high winds and heavy rain Monday afternoon and evening, and may drop up to 3 inches of rain per hour “with even higher instantaneous rates,” NWS said. Forecasters expect the wet weather to leave the area sometime Tuesday, but rain will linger in spots.

There’s a chance of storms again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s Monday, and forecasters expect humidity to remain high — with dewpoint temperatures in the 70s. The District continues to encourage residents to stay hydrated, take breaks in air-conditioned spaces and check on vulnerable neighbors.
